WHEN I MISS YOU

Words by Alyssa Sheppard

When I miss you, I pour you a cup of coffee, black just as you liked.

I now understand why you sat outside at the end of the day in quiet. While my mind ran wild with imagination for entertainment, you were trying to settle yours down.

I would do anything to do that with you now. I think that is heaven: me and you sitting in the old backyard.

Then I can ask you if you heard me through the marigolds and tell you my knee hurts when it’s going to rain now too.

You can tell me if that was you who flew over my wedding as a Garza. I put larkspur in my bouquet like I told you I would when I was a child.
